Quest for Success

With just a few days left before we ring in the New Year, many people are sitting around proclaiming their New Year’s resolutions.

The No. 1 New Year’s resolution in North America is to lose weight. Close on its heels is the resolution to start exercising. The next one is to quit smoking, followed by getting out of debt.  Great goals to have, but should there only be one day put aside for making resolutions?  What about the other 364 days?  What’s even worse is that most resolutions made at New Years won’t even last more than a week.

I’ve always asserted that if there’s something I believe in or feel I should do, then it can be done any time of the year.  I don’t need to wait for Jan 1 to make it my resolution and then work on it for the rest of the coming year.

What is success?

Ralph Waldo Emerson’s answer is definitely something to ponder:

Think big. Talk little. Love much. Laugh easily. Work hard. Give freely. Pay cash. And be kind – IT’S ENOUGH …
He continued on to say …

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
And affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and
To endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better
Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or
A redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier
Because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882)

These are all lessons we have heard before.  But perhaps these are things we need to be reminded of.  I will be printing this out and keeping it by my desk.

Here’s to a making 2011 ‘successful’, and to resolutions we already know about but need to be reminded of…
