There are many of us that have been lucky, thus far, and have not personally been diagnosed with cancer. However, we have or are experiencing much pain and suffering, just in a different form.  While our loved ones are living through the disease, we show our love and support as best that we know how and will often be part of the decision making process regarding treatments or other key events… Sometimes on matters that no person should ever have to make.

An email arrived Tuesday from a wonderful friend, living on the other side of the world, who shared that a short 30 days ago, his girlfriend’s ovarian cancer had returned only to have spread to her Lymphatic system.  He put his work on hold to stay close to her and was having a very difficult time watching her body deteriorate before his eyes.  Another email arrived yesterday sharing that a sudden turn of events just happened and his girlfriend’s fight would soon be over… within days.  He was asked if there was any family or friends that should be notified to say their last good byes and that the decision to let her go comfortably or insert a tube through her throat into her lung which might give her 2-3 more days max, needed to be made.

His email was asking for my advice and what he should do… He was torn between letting her go comfortably and yet feeling selfish because he wasn’t ready yet.  He wanted to know what I would do if this was my decision?

What does one say???

I heard a song last night by John Mayer “Say” that seems, perhaps, appropriate…

Have no fear for giving in
Have no fear for giving over
You’d better know that in the end
It’s better to say too much
Then never say what you need to say

Even if your hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open

Say What You Need To Say

All my love and positive energy goes out to Nelson during this difficult time…
